When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

If you are experiencing symptoms like pain and soreness in the rear of your mouth, swelling near your wisdom teeth, or a shift in your bite or how your teeth fit together, you may need to have your wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth usually grow in from the age of 17-25. If possible, it’s recommended that you have your wisdom teeth extracted by age 25. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to extract them, and the higher the likelihood is that they could permanently damage the surrounding teeth.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Why Do They Need To Be Removed?

Our wisdom teeth are our third set of molars. By the time they erupt, most of us don’t have enough space to accommodate them in our mouths, even though they are a natural part of our bodies. This is particularly true for patients who have had orthodontic treatment. Because there is not enough space for these teeth, wisdom teeth may erupt incorrectly and cause other issues. They may grow sideways, push other teeth out of the way, or fail to come out completely. This can lead to a number of serious complications, so tooth extraction is usually recommended in these cases.

What Happens If I Don't

Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Some people don’t need to have their wisdom teeth removed at all. If you have enough space in your mouth and your wisdom teeth erupt properly, you can keep them, and your oral health will not be affected. However, if you don’t have space in your mouth for your wisdom teeth and don't have them removed, this may cause permanent damage to your surrounding teeth. This can also put you at risk of serious dental infections. To ensure your mouth stays healthy, come into Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics for a consultation with Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio.
Mouthguards also prevent soft tissue injuries by covering up your sharp teeth. Without a mouthguard, you could accidentally bite your tongue, lips, or cheeks when you experience a fall or blow to the head, causing serious lacerations and heavy bleeding.

What to Expect

The Process of Removing Wisdom Teeth

The wisdom tooth extraction process is very simple. First, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio will use a tool called a dental elevator to loosen the tooth in its socket. Once it’s loose, a dental forceps will be used to grasp the tooth by its root, and extract it. Once the tooth has been removed, the area will be cleaned and sutured shut. This process will be repeated for each wisdom tooth, if the removal of more than one tooth is required.
