What to Expect

In-Office Teeth Whitening Appointments

In-office whitening is performed by Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio, and this efficient, painless, non-invasive treatment can brighten your smile up to 10 shades in a single appointment. The process will begin with a thorough cleaning to remove any plaque. Then, we will analyze the color of your teeth and choose the right whitening compound for your needs.

Retractors and gauze will be used to keep your lips, tongue and cheeks away from the whitening compound. Barriers are usually also applied to the gums, as the peroxide whitening solution can irritate them. Your teeth will be coated with peroxide, and a UV light will be used to enhance its efficiency. Multiple coats may be applied, and the compound will be left in place for 30-60 minutes Then, it will be rinsed away to reveal bright, white teeth.

The Treatment Process

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

We also offer custom take-home whitening trays at Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics. This treatment is perfect for patients looking for gradual results in the comfort of their own home. To begin, we will take impressions of your teeth and create your custom whitening trays.

Then, we will supply you with professional-grade whitening agents, which you will apply to your trays based on the instructions provided by Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio. Most patients will use take-home whiteners for 2-3 weeks. The end results of take-home whitening are the same as an in-office whitening, but the process is more subtle.

What’s the Difference?

Store Bought Whitening vs. Professional

Some over-the-counter whitening products are safe and ADA-approved, like Crest Whitestrips. But most of these products are not vetted by the ADA, and may contain very low or dangerously high levels of peroxide whitening agents. In addition, some “whiteners” are completely ineffective and even dangerous. Charcoal toothpaste, for example, is a harsh abrasive and can destroy your enamel, though it is advertised as a “whitener”. For the safest, and most consistent results, you should always have your teeth professionally whitened.

Preserving Your Smile

How Long Will Whitening Results Last?

With proper oral hygiene, your newly-whitened teeth can last for several years. It is critical to brush and floss regularly and visit our office for routine teeth cleanings. Take care to brush or rinse your mouth after drinking beverages like coffee, tea, and wine. Occasional whitening touch-ups from Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics can also be used to keep your teeth looking great for years to come.
