If you are missing one or more teeth and you are looking for an affordable, natural-looking replacement option, dentures may be right for you. Partial dentures use a metal or plastic framework to attach to your remaining healthy teeth and suspend a false tooth in place. Full dentures, on the other hand, are only used if you are missing most or all of your teeth, because they fit directly over your gums and require the extraction of any remaining teeth.
Both full and partial dentures are efficient, economical ways to restore your smile if you are missing teeth. For more information, schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonifacio or Dr. Reyes at Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics
Dentures allow you to restore your smile and your bite. With dentures, you’ll be able to smile, speak, and chew normally again. This economical replacement option will help you get back to your day-to-day life, whether you have lost just one or all of your teeth. Both partial and full dentures are almost always covered by insurance, and they are very affordable compared to other methods of tooth replacement, like dental implants or bridges. If you are on a budget, dentures may be the best way to restore your smile.
The process will vary slightly based on whether you’re getting full or partial dentures. For partial dentures, treatment begins with taking impressions and images of your teeth, then sending the information to a dental lab where your dentures will be created. Then, an initial set of partial dentures will be sent to our office. If they fit perfectly, the process is complete. However, adjustments may often be required to ensure that your dentures fit perfectly.
If you need full dentures, any remaining teeth must be extracted before your dentures are created. Once your gums heal after extraction, impressions will be taken and sent to a dental lab. A mock-up denture will be sent to our office and you will try this temporary prosthetic to ensure that it fits perfectly. Once the fit is perfect, your final set of dentures will be built and sent to our office, adjusted, then placed into your mouth to restore the appearance and function of your smile.
It’s important to keep your dentures clean by brushing them daily and rinsing them whenever you take them out of your mouth. Also, ensure they are kept moist whenever they are outside of your mouth, such as when you’re sleeping. This will prevent warping and damage to your dentures. When you get your dentures from Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics, we’ll send you home with detailed care instructions to keep you informed and help ensure that your dentures last as long as possible.
Your dentures will last for a significant amount of time - up to 10 years in some cases. That said, the longevity of your dentures will largely depend upon how well you take care of them. To maximize the lifespan of your dentures, it is important to practice good oral hygiene for both the natural teeth and gums as well as for the dentures themselves. Brush your dentures regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Avoid vigorous scrubbing which could cause them to become damaged over time. Also, never use household chemicals on your dentures because they can be abrasive and weaken them.
Additionally, it’s important to have them relined every 2 to 3 years due to the changes in your mouth’s shape - this helps prevent rubbing and sores from forming. When you are not wearing them, make sure to store them in water so they do not lose moisture, otherwise, they can warp or break. Last but not least, regular visits to the dentist for checkups will help them look and feel their best for as long as possible. With these tips and tricks, you’re sure to get the most out of your dentures for many years!
Eating with dentures can be a new experience, but you'll be happy to know that you can eat just about any food. That said, it's important to keep in mind that your gums may need some time to adapt to your new dentures. Initially, it's recommended that you start with soft foods, as they're easier to chew and won't put as much pressure on your dentures or gums. Gradually, you can start introducing harder and more challenging foods as your mouth adjusts.
It's also important to check the temperature of your food before you put it in your mouth. Your dentures can affect your ability to sense hot and cold temperatures, so you may not be able to tell if something is too hot until it's too late. Another tip is to avoid holding liquids in your mouth, as this can dislodge your dentures or cause them to slip. Instead, try to take smaller sips and use a straw if possible. Sticky foods, such as chewing gum or caramel, can also be problematic for denture wearers. They can stick to your dentures and make them uncomfortable or difficult to remove. Spicy foods can also irritate your gums and cause discomfort.
While it's true that the feeling of dentures will never be quite the same as natural teeth, this doesn't mean they should cause pain. If you're feeling any discomfort in your mouth from wearing dentures - whether it be soreness, pressure, or any other annoying sensation - then don't hesitate to visit a dentist or denturist for help. With the right adjustments and care, you can continue to wear a stunning smile without worrying about any lingering pains.
