What are Mouth & Night Guards?

Mouthguards and night guards are used for different purposes, but they are both designed to protect your mouth. Mouthguards are usually used to protect your mouth during athletic activities, such as playing sports where contact with another person or a fall could be possible. They are made of a soft, rubbery material that covers up your teeth and cushions them, protecting your teeth from any potential impacts.

Night guards are slightly different. They are meant to be worn at night to mitigate the effects of teeth grinding (bruxism). By preventing direct contact between the teeth, night guards prevent damage to your teeth caused by grinding. There are also some types of nightguards that are intended to help treat sleep apnea by repositioning your jaw. These are sometimes referred to as “oral appliances.”

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The Fitting Process

The basic process for fitting your mouthguard or night guard will be the same. At your initial appointment we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to our partner dental lab. The lab will then begin creating your custom night guard or mouth guard. This usually takes a few weeks. We’ll give you a call when it’s ready, and you can come to our office to pick up your mouthguard or night guard.

Why Athletes Need Mouthguards

Protect Your Mouth from Oral Injuries

Mouthguards are absolutely essential when you are participating in any kind of activity that could result in an oral injury. They are made out of a soft material that helps spread out pressure from impacts on your mouth and cushion the teeth. By using a mouthguard you can  prevent issues like chips and cracks. They can even prevent your tooth from getting knocked-out. If you do take a hit, your mouthguard will protect your teeth.

Mouthguards also prevent soft tissue injuries by covering up your sharp teeth. Without a mouthguard, you could accidentally bite your tongue, lips, or cheeks when you experience a fall or blow to the head, causing serious lacerations and heavy bleeding.

Treating Sleep Apnea & Bruxism

With Night Guards

Night guards create a strong barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing them from coming into direct contact. While they do not treat the cause of nighttime teeth grinding, they do prevent grinding from causing damage to your teeth. Some types of night guard are meant to treat obstructive sleep apnea. These are usually a bit bulkier, and are intended to move your jaw to a healthy position, which prevents the tissue of your throat and palate from obstructing your airway.
