Restore Damaged Teeth

Dental Crowns

Modern dental crowns are made out of porcelain and they are designed to completely cover up a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, structure, and natural function. By covering up the entire tooth down to the gumline, a crown helps prevent future damage. Crowns are most often used to cover up teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay or a cavity that is too large to be treated with a filling. They can also be used to repair teeth that have been cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged in an oral injury.

Crowns & Bridges

How They Work Together

Fixed bridges consist of two crowns that attach to healthy abutment teeth on either side of your missing tooth, and these are used to suspend a false tooth in the gap. Cantilever bridges also make use of dental crowns. They are attached to a single healthy tooth using a crown, suspending one or more false teeth to cover a gap. This type of bridge is often used when there are not two healthy abutment teeth next to your missing teeth.

Some types of bridges, like a Maryland bridge, do not require crowns to be attached to abutment teeth, but instead use metal “wings” and a framework that are bonded to your adjacent teeth to support a crown.

For more information about each type of dental bridge and to determine which one may be right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio at Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics.

How Long do

Crowns & Bridges last?

Porcelain dental crowns usually last about 10-15 years. Over time, the crown may become damaged and worn out due to wear and tear, or it may come loose as the dental cement holding onto your tooth begins to fail. Tooth decay can also cause a dental crown to fail prematurely.

To keep your crown in good shape, you should continue to maintain good oral hygiene habits. Brush and floss regularly and eat a healthy diet low in sugar. You should also see your dentist at Rio Vista Family Dentistry for an appointment every six months, so that they can check on your crown and make sure it’s in good shape.

Dental bridges tend to have a similar lifespan, but since they must attach to two teeth, they tend to wear out a little bit faster, since there are more possible “points of failure.” It’s common for bridges to last between 5-10 years.

Again, though, you can keep your bridge in good shape for a longer period of time by taking care of your teeth, cleaning your bridge as directed by your dentist, and seeing the team at Rio Vista Family Dentistry for checkups every six months.

Why choose

Dental Crowns?

You should choose dental crowns if you have a seriously damaged tooth. If your tooth has a large cavity, has been cracked or broken by dental trauma, or has been treated with a root canal to eliminate a tooth infection, a crown will always be the best way to protect your tooth.

This is because dental crowns look and feel like natural teeth, but they also protect your remaining tooth structure. Your crown will cover up the remaining tooth all the way down to the gumline. This protects it from damage, decay, and oral bacteria, keeping it in good shape for years to come.

Crowns can also be a good option if you have a very stained, misshapen, or otherwise unappealing tooth that can’t be treated with a standard cosmetic treatment like a veneer. While cosmetic crowns are a bit more rare, they can be a good option.

Why choose

Dental Bridges?

When it comes to restoring missing teeth, dental bridges occupy a middle ground between partial dentures and dental implants.

Compared to partial dentures, they are much more secure, have a longer lifespan, require less maintenance, and look and feel more natural in your mouth. However, they’re more expensive, and require you to trim two healthy natural teeth.

Compared to dental implants, though, dental bridges don’t last as long. They’re also more invasive, since your healthy teeth must be trimmed for a bridge and this is not necessary for an implant. Bridges also do not feel as natural as implants. However, the bridge procedure is typically less expensive, takes a lot less time, and is covered by dental insurance, while dental implants are not covered by most insurers.

Overall, bridges are a good choice if you do not have the budget for implants and want fast results, but you’d like a solution that’s easier to care for and feels more natural compared to partial dentures.
