Everything You Need To Know About Dentures In San Diego

Interested in getting dentures in San Diego? Learn more about the basics from Rio Vista Family Dentistry. We’ll discuss everything you need to know about dentures, and help you determine if they may be a good choice for replacing your missing teeth.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums designed to fit perfectly into your mouth and replace several or all of your teeth. They’re built to look and feel completely natural and restore the appearance and function of your smile.

The two primary types of dentures are full or “complete” dentures and partial dentures. Full dentures are meant to replace all of your upper, lower, or both rows of teeth, and require you to have all of your remaining teeth pulled.

Partial dentures are made to replace one or several missing teeth. They don’t require any other teeth to be removed, and they clip onto your remaining healthy teeth, then fill up the gaps in your smile.

What Are Dentures Made Of?

Partially, this depends on the type of dentures. Full dentures are usually made with a pink, gum-colored acrylic plastic base, and durable, natural-looking acrylic teeth. Partial dentures are also usually made of acrylic, but also incorporate metal components to stabilize the dentures and to allow them to clip onto your healthy teeth.

The Benefits Of Dentures

The biggest benefit of dentures is that they restore your natural smile and bite. You can smile without worrying about the negative effects of missing teeth on your appearance, and you can speak clearly and eat your favorite foods once again.

Dentures also are minimally invasive. Unless you need teeth to be removed for full dentures, there’s no need for any kind of invasive dental surgery, which may be appealing to some patients.

Beyond this, dentures are an affordable way to replace your missing teeth and are typically covered by dental insurance up to applicable coverage limits. This is not always the case for alternatives like dental bridges and dental implants.

The Basics Of Denture Care

Both full and partial dentures are removable, and require similar care. You should take them out when you sleep and soak them in a denture cleaner. This keeps them clean, and also lets your gums rest and recover from wearing your dentures all day.

You should also remove and rinse your dentures after you eat to remove food debris and other loose particles, and brush your gums and/or remaining teeth to keep them clean. It’s also recommended to brush your dentures at least once per day.
